Healthcare providers in adult prisons

Queensland Health provides health care for people in prison through their Hospital and Health Services (HHS).

Your prison health team will include medical, nursing and allied health professionals. It’s their job to help you stay healthy and well, and understand your health, and any choices you have about your treatment and care.

You can ask to see them whenever you need health care.

Health professionals in the prisoner health service work for Queensland Health. We keep your health information confidential unless:

  • you agree that we can share it with Corrective Services
  • there's a health emergency.

Corrective Services may also employ their own health professionals to care for your safety and security. We keep health and security responsibilities separate in line with the United Nations standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners, or Nelson Mandela rules.
